Types of Doors by BACK Construction in Lexington, Kentucky

Come and Knock on our Door…

Keeping weather out, inviting visitors in… depending on what you need done, you may need a different set of doors!

Types of Doors

Whether coming or going, doors are the way we’re able to travel from room to room, from indoors to outdoors, and in and out of the elements. Nowadays, homeowners have no shortage of choice in selecting a door, which can range from solid, flush styles to decorative, glass-paneled designs. Check out some of the types of doors, as well as their purpose below!

  • Entry – The front or “main” entrance to your home, most often facing the street. These are the doors that your visitors will enter through, so this door usually makes a statement. These doors can also include a transom or sidelights. A transom is the fixed glass panel installed above some doors, while the sidelights are tall and narrow glass panels that can be attached on either side of the frame of your doors.
  • Panel – A classic style of door that usually has three or four horizontal rails and three vertical stiles.
  • Flush – These doors are simple, flat slabs. These doors blend well with contemporary settings, and are often the least expensive choice.
  • Hinged Patio – Panels made from mostly glass, that can swing in or out to allow entry. These doors have multipoint locks, which means that they use a system allowing one to secure their doors at two or more locking points. These doors often include what is called a ‘sweep’ at the bottom, which is a weather-resistant system at the bottom of the door that seals air and water outside. Most commonly used are French doors.
  • Sliding Patio – Panels made mostly from glass, with one panel sliding open and closed horizontally. These doors typically have a roller, which enables the door to slide open and closed. Many of these doors include a footbolt, allowing users to lock the door from the bottom, and is operated with their foot.
  • Storm – Usually used with an entry door for added protection from mother nature. Usually energy efficient, and provides light and ventilation. These are usually made of metal or vinyl, but wood models are also available. Some storm doors have locks that can be used as a smaller level of security.
  • Custom – Doors are available in a variety of sizes and shapes depending on your needs.
  • Scenescape – Doors with multiple panels in a wide array of configurations, allowing the doors to slide, fold, stack, or pocket to allow a view to the outside.
