A leaky roof can cause bigger issues down the road.
Your roof has done a lot for you: protected you during storms, kept out the snow, and made sure that you stay nice and dry. If your roof suddenly springs a leak, you may be able to fix it safely without needing a completely new roof. Here’s some tips!

Stay Safe
Nobody benefits from risky roofing.
If you notice a leak during a rainstorm or while your roof is covered in ice and snow, wait until Mother Nature subsides before traversing to the rooftop! Holding off until the weather is nice will help save you time and money (not to mention possible hospital bills). Most small roofing fixes can be completed in a few days if weather permits. When you’ve determined that it’s safe to head up to the roof, wear rubber soled shoes to help prevent slipping, and always bring along a buddy.

Speaking of Safety…
Your ladder should help – not hinder.
Remember these important safety tips for ladders – the last thing you want is to peek over the edge and see that your ladder has hit the ground!
- Be sure that your ladder is on solid ground
- Secure your ladder to the roof to prevent it from falling
- Make sure that your ladder is in good shape – be aware of any broken sections or loose rungs before using it
- Use both hands when climbing a ladder

Finding Your Leak
Grab the garden hose and start spraying!
Once you’re up on the roof, it’s time to get down to business. If you noticed the leak during a particularly heavy rainstorm or after a snowy season, using a water hose on your roof may help you to determine the location of the leak. Wait until it’s warm out (water on a frozen roof will lead to ice, which could lead to a fall), and then start soaking!

Clean it Up!
Keeping your roof clean can help stop problems before they start.
A common cause for leaks in your roof are clogged, dirty gutters. Clean out your gutters regularly to help avoid issues caused by dead leaves! While you’re up there, check for dry rot, which can also cause leaks and destruction to your roof.

Shifty Shingles
Nail down any shingles issues.
If shingles are faulty, they’ll crack and warp over time after they’ve been nailed down. If installed incorrectly, these faulty shingles can cause massive leaks. Always check shingles before they go up onto the roof – early detection could save tons in the long run!
