The Best Brush for your Paint
Brushes come in a variety of sizes, styles, and types. Choosing a specific brush could make or break your project.
Types of brushes, as well as their usual use, are:
Blended nylon/polyester brushes – easy to clean, and work well with latex paints. These brushes are usually very durable, and will last for years with proper care.
Polyester brushes – the best for latex paints. These hold their shape & stiffness, and apply paint evenly and smoothly across a surface.
Natural brushes – brushes that are made with animal hair are best used to apply oil-based paints, shellac, and other oil-based finishes.
Brush End Types
Different end types of brushes can help achieve different textures and reach specific areas.
- Chisel Trim – slanted bristles produce a straight line for trimmer corners and edges.
- Square Trim – the cut square at the end of the bristles are helpful for applying paint over flat areas.
- Angled Trim – these brushes make it easier to apply paint to window trim.
Drop Cloths
Save yourself from a future mess! Protect floors and any immovable furniture with a drop cloth. Old newspapers can be used in a pinch, but that’s not recommended – especially for carpeted areas.
- Canvas – heavy duty, long-lasting, and absorbent. While expensive, they’ll last a very long time.
- Plastic – available in a wide range of thicknesses, as well as lightweight. These aren’t absorbent, however, though they’re fairly cost-effective.
- Paper – inexpensive and absorbent, but are prone to ripping easily.
- Paper/poly blend – low-cost, disposable, and absorbent. However, these are also prone to ripping.
