Kitchen Backsplashes: Completing Your Kitchen

Have you ever successfully finished a picture-perfect kitchen remodel, only to spray your freshly painted walls with the sauce from your celebratory spaghetti dinner? With a backsplash, you can avoid disasters like this in the future. Learn more about kitchen backsplashes below!

Whether you have or haven’t had the displeasure of cooking without a backsplash, you probably know the importance of having a backsplash in your kitchen. What you may not be as aware of is how essential a backsplash is to a pulled together kitchen design. Whether you want to add some color to your kitchen or tie the design together, backsplashes are a great addition to any kitchen, new or old.

Materials

Backsplashes, like any other kitchen material, come in a wide variety of materials and suit different kitchen designs. One of the most popular and durable backsplash materials is ceramic subway tiles. White subway tiles add decoration, while also providing enough toughness to withstand anything your cooking endeavors throw at them. When companied with white cabinets and marble or white quartz countertops, white subway tile can lend a beautifully monochromatic look to your kitchen.

Another popular backsplash material choice is to use tiled or solid marble, or other stones, to give your kitchen a natural or organically modern feel. Tiles can let you use your stone to play with patterns, whereas solid, wrapped backsplashes can give your kitchen visual continuity, making your space appear larger.

Unlike ceramic tile or stone, glass tiles play well with light and can add more shine than ceramic or stone. Not to say glass tile is always shiny, as you can utilize glossy, matte, or etched glass tiles to suit your preference. To create visual variety, mix shiny glass tiles and glass tiles without shine. Glass tile perfectly accentuates steel appliances.

While tile backsplashes look great and compliment several styles of kitchens, metal, such as steel or bronze, can add texture and sheen and tie your metallic appliances and accessories back in. Metal kitchen backsplashes can also add a reflective quality to your kitchen, which can brighten up your space. While tiles are more versatile, metal kitchen backsplashes look phenomenal in industrial or modern kitchens, as do mirrored backsplashes.

Customization

Horizontal tiles are classic and lead your eye from left to right, but once you have seen a few backsplashes, you may feel like you have seen them all. However, mixing materials, creating patterns, or changing tile angles can differentiate your kitchen design from others. The interchange of materials combined with alternating angles can give your kitchen a truly one-of-a-kind look.

Alternating tiles, materials, or colors can cut down on cost, while also keeping your kitchen from appearing too one note. Also, placing tiles that are traditionally placed vertically or horizontally at a diagonal can create a modern, expensive look for less money than buying a marble backsplash or other costly material. Lastly, if you only have enough in your budget to splurge on a certain amount of expensive material, place that material above the stove, so it can stand as the focal point of your kitchen.
