Room Brightness Shouldn’t be taken Lightly
Common sense suggests that most people understand the basic importance of interior lighting. At the end of every day, the sun sets and natural light disappears, making it much more difficult to perceive the surrounding area and navigate through the house. Check out our lighting cheat sheet!
Illuminating Information
On the 14th day of October, 1878, Thomas Edison said, “Let there be artificial light*” (*not an actual quotation).
Now, in 2016, the use of interior lighting has become a standard part of American homes and buildings for the simple fact that people still need to be able to see after the sun goes down. However, the importance of interior lighting spreads beyond providing sight during the evening hours. Different types and techniques of lighting can put emphasis on certain parts of a room, set the mood, and bring out the overall beauty of a house and its décor. Integrating the following types of lighting in your home will brighten up the mood of residents and visitors alike!
Ambient Light
This first type of interior lighting is the most common and is probably featured in almost every room that you have stepped foot in. Ambient light is general, uniformed light source that is used to illuminate a room evenly. This is usually created from an overhead light fixture and is usually connected to the primary light switch at the entrance of a room. Although this type is basic and already used in most cases, it is important because it allows the entire area of a room to be visible. Ambient usage will be of great assistance when cleaning and/or trying to find the spider you saw out of the corner of your eye.
Task Lighting
Hence the name, task lighting is focused on one area of a room and will be used be used for specific purposes or tasks. The lamp on top of a work desk is usually used when extra light is needed to finish off a work project. This type of lighting should not be the main or only source of light in a room because many corners of the room will be left in the dark. While the coverage area is much smaller than ambient lights, task lighting is very useful for convenience purposes.
Accent Lighting
To take any room in the house to the next level, accent lighting is one way to do it. Simply put, accent lighting is used to highlight and bring attention to certain objects or areas in a room. So, if you think that a painting in your living room is beautiful but often goes unnoticed by guests, highlighting said painting will catch the eyes of every person who walks in the room. As opposed to the first two types of lighting, accent lights are most useful in common areas of the house, like the living room. There will always be much more foot traffic in these rooms making them look as inviting as possible is a good idea. This type of lighting will give any room the elegance and sense of professionalism that is always difficult to find children running around everywhere.
Decorative Lighting
Decorative lights refer to an object producing light that is also meant to be the focal point of the room. Accent lighting is used to highlight and draw more attention to the focal point of the room but in this case, the actual lighting fixture is supposed to get all of the attention. Whether it is a light coming from the fireplace or a gorgeous chandelier in the middle of the foyer, these pieces are supposed to be something for your guests to remember. Since there is a great deal of pressure put on these lights, it’s best to limit your household to one or two of them. This way your guests won’t be at risk of sensory overloads and you won’t have to worry about blowing to large of a hole in your wallet.
The Bottom Line
While ambient lighting is probably the only type of lighting that would be considered a necessity, mixing these other types together with it will bring a beauty to your house that you would never have expected. Many of these lighting techniques can be used in the same rooms that would provide a layering effect and add more interest to your home.
